When someone doesn’t have a bond, it means that they are being held in custody without the option of being released on bail pending trial.

This could occur for several reasons…

1. Seriousness of the Offense – In cases involving serious offenses such as capital crimes or violent felonies, a judge may determine that the defendant poses too great a risk to the community or is too much of a flight risk to be released on bond.

2. Flight Risk – If there is a high risk that the defendant will flee or fail to appear for court hearings, the judge may deny bail and order the defendant to be held without bond.

3. Violation of Probation or Pretrial Release – If the defendant is already on probation or pretrial release for another offense and is accused of violating the terms of their release, they may be held without bond until their probation violation hearing.

4. Public Safety Concerns – If the judge determines that releasing the defendant on bond would pose a danger to public safety, they may order the defendant to be held without bond.

5. Flight Risk – If the judge believes that the defendant is likely to flee the jurisdiction or not appear for court hearings, they may deny bail and order the defendant to be held without bond.
